Periodontal disease (gum disease) begins with mild gum inflammation (gingivitis) and is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults. In some cases there are no symptoms of periodontal disease, but it is typically known with red, swollen, painful and bleeding gums. Bacteria which live in plaque causes infection in the surrounding tissues of the teeth. Such an infection will cause the jawbone to recede and teeth to loosen.
